If you own a home for any length of time, there is a chance that you have needed some extra space to store all of your outdoor products. A detached shed is always a good option for your lawnmower, gardening tools, or anything else. However, there is a chance that animals could attempt to enter and live there. Below we have outlined some strategies to prevent this from happening.

The primary method used is called trench screening. First step is to confirm that there are no animals inside your shed. Next, close all the holes in the shed. What we are trying to prevent here is animals digging a hole and coming up to inhabit the shed from underneath. You will then need to dig a trench near the opening of your shed. Cover it with a hard cloth or wire mesh. Bend the bottom part to prevent animals from plowing underneath. Place the mesh inside the trench and fill it with soil. Finally, attach the top of the mesh to the bottom of the shed.

Another method is the prevention of animals entering the storage space. This is the easiest method as it only requires work on the front end. Keep the space clean and free of clutter. This entails cleaning out the floor so that there are not any places where the critters can comfortably sleep. There cannot be any food chunks on the floor or excess debris either. Organizing your belongings with plastic bins will help keep animals away. Lastly, you can even put trap and release cages inside to humanely catch the critters.

Things to avoid are raising your shed. This will draw more light into it and encourage animals to live there. Also, do not flood the floor of the shed because while this may temporarily rid the critters, it will increase mold growth.
